Abstract

Grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this mixed-methods study investigates the relationship between perceived psychological needs and autonomous learning motivation among secondary vocational students. Qualitative interviews first identified salient needs and motivational drivers, which were then validated and explored through quantitative surveys. Results revealed that peer-relatedness and competence, but not autonomy, were significant psychological needs. Autonomous motivation manifested in three dimensions: learning interest, future career development, and exam success. Multiple regression confirmed that psychological needs positively predict autonomous motivation, with peer influence being the strongest predictor. The findings support the cross-cultural application of SDT and offer practical strategies for educators to foster motivation by addressing students' specific psychological needs.
